The DBA role here is very varied and is a mixture of DBA\SQL Development and Business Intelligence development. This is fantastic as there is always new technology to learn and the job stays varied and busy keeping you enthused and occupied. I am the principal technical database expert and have a great team of experts around me too.
My team are responsible for all aspects of database design, maintenance and performance. My personal favourite aspect of the job is performance tuning the systems. I love being able to take a slow performing query and tuning it to run in milliseconds. It is easy to see the physical impact of these changes and how they benefit our internal and external customers.
I have been working for tm group for over 15 years and my career has grown with the company. When I started tm group had less than 40 employees and the company has grown over 400% over this period. I used to work for a massive international corporation with over 100K employees and the biggest advantage working for a smaller more dynamic workplace is that you see the results of your hard work directly impact the company and your colleagues.
Why do you like working at tmgroup?
TM is like an extended family to me; a lot of my colleagues are also my friends and I have seen their children grow up and go to university. I have also seen friends get married and have celebrated with them. The company organises events like an annual family BBQ and as well as more team driven events like regularly getting together on a Friday lunch time for a meal.
We continually develop and explore using up to date technologies and you are encouraged to train and learn new skills all the time. My colleagues are an enthusiastic bunch and I love bouncing and reviewing ideas with them. There is a good work life balance and a great culture here. I like the fact that everyone can contribute ideas from the graduate developer up to the CTO and that will all be listened to. The Christmas parties are excellent, and I have enjoyed many an evening on the dance floor!
What do I do outside of work?
I am a new father and my toddler now takes up most of my free time. When I can though I do enjoy PC Gaming, Dungeons & Dragons, Photography and Lego (Yes, I am an adult fan of Lego, there are more of us than you realise!!).
